Watercooling Project No.2

I have been inspired to build a fully watercooled pc, ever since i saw the amazing Scan White Cobra. But at the minute I have a Q6600 G0 @ 3.85Ghz in an Asus Maxmius Formula SE, with 2GB OCZ Reaper Ram. My graphics card is an 8800gt, however I see little point watercooling this as it has reached the limits of overclocking (750mhz core, 2020mhz RAM), so watercooling this would just make it run cooler.

So, it’s back to the drawing board. Again. But this time I won’t need to buy all the parts for a full system (don’t need a new case, sound card, PSU , HDD’s, DVD drive).

The new components that I have chosen are;

  • Asus Maximus Extreme
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450
  • OCZ DDR3 1600 4GB RAM Kit
  • An 9800GX2
  • and all the necessary parts to make 3 seperate cooling loops.

For the CPU, I am keeping the existing 360mm radiator that’s in the front of the Kandalf case I have, and I will get a new pump, CPU block, tubing and coolant.

The fusion block heatsink setup on the board are to be ripped off and replaced with waterblocks, so the north and south bridge chipsets, and the mosfets, will be watercooled helping to keep temperates down and to get maximum overclocks. This will be cooled by a 240mm and a 120mm radiator.

Now, as the 9800GX2 has just been launched, I can’t find any waterblocks for it (well not in this country anyway). So i’ll have to wait for a waterblock. As for radiators, reviews have said that it produces a fair bit of heat, so just as a precaution and as I want to overclock it, I will use 2 240mm radiators for a greater cooling ability.

Now as I have so many fans on the radiators and in the case (12 to be precise) , I plan to have them hooked up to fan controllers to enable me to have a effective cooling without my ears bleeding.

So, once i have designed the layout for the case (and scraped my pennies together) the project will begin!!

Check out Vadim. They have one of their Blastflow waterblocks ready for the GX2 (about £120 for the complete kit).
Personally, I’m going to wait and see what the new drivers can do for Quad SLI before I buy a new card.

Depending on what radiators you opt for there seems to be a fair bit of overkill in the cooling department. I appreciate you’ll want to max things out (bare in mind that doing so for long periods can shorten the life of motherboards considerably) but two 240mm radiators for the GX2 and a 240mm+120mm for the MB chipsets alone is excessive to say the least even if you want things to be quiet. The Thermaltake 360mm should be ok for the CPU. A second 360mm rad (or a 240mm and 120mm) for the GPU and chipsets/VRMs would be more than adequate.

EK blocks should be releasing their 9800GX2 waterblock in the next couple of weeks.

I want to have these amount of radiators because this will provide me with a lot of overclocking potential and help to keep the components at a chilly temperature. The reason for the drastic cooling on the GPU is because it produces a lot of heat at stock performance, plus, I want to overclock it to within an inch of it’s life.

so thats a 360, three 240 and a 120mm Rad, in a thermaltake Kandalf?

i look forward to seeing it finished

Yes that’s how many radiators I plan on cramming into the case. However it will be worth it!!!

Plus, EK have released 3 9800GX2 waterblocks!!!!

That set up sounds great. Though, if ya gettin DDR3 mem, invest in DDR3-1800!!!
Helps quads oc a lot more!!!
