Watercooling Update!!!

Because I hungry for power and speed, my original plans of a Q9450 and DDR3 12800 have been thrown right out the window and have been replaced with a QX9650 and 4GB (4 X 1GB) DDR3 14400.

After a lot of thinking, I have decided against a 9800GX2 as it would just consume too much electricity and i’m really a hard core gamer, so that’s being replaced with a EVGA SSC 9800GTX and a slimline waterblock.

As for the case, I can’t be @r$ed faffin with the Thermaltake Kandalf case, so i’m gettin a silverstone TJ-07 case and modding that instead.

Well the project will hopefully get going in mid June.

Case Design

Now that I sort of know what parts are going into my new pc, it’s time to start planning.
I have made some basic designs to give you an idea of what it will look like.
The left panel will have two mesh sections for two of the 240mm radiators. There will also be an acrylic window.
left side panel
The top of the case will hold another 240mm radiator at the front, and at the back will be mesh to allow hot air to escape from the case and vent which I will put in the PSU.

This is a simple view of where the radiators will be placed.

These images are only temporary. I’m currently working on a 3d model of the case. Check back soon!!!!

Watercooling Project No.2

Posted in on April 9, 2008 at 3:35 pm

I have been inspired to build a fully watercooled pc, ever since i saw the amazing Scan White Cobra. But at the minute I have a Q6600 G0 @ 3.85Ghz in an Asus Maxmius Formula SE, with 2GB OCZ Reaper Ram. My graphics card is an 8800gt, however I see little point watercooling this as it has reached the limits of overclocking (750mhz core, 2020mhz RAM), so watercooling this would just make it run cooler.

So, it’s back to the drawing board. Again. But this time I won’t need to buy all the parts for a full system (don’t need a new case, sound card, PSU , HDD’s, DVD drive).

The new components that I have chosen are;

  • Asus Maximus Extreme
  • Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450
  • OCZ DDR3 1600 4GB RAM Kit
  • An 9800GX2
  • and all the necessary parts to make 3 seperate cooling loops.

For the CPU, I am keeping the existing 360mm radiator that’s in the front of the Kandalf case I have, and I will get a new pump, CPU block, tubing and coolant.

The fusion block heatsink setup on the board are to be ripped off and replaced with waterblocks, so the north and south bridge chipsets, and the mosfets, will be watercooled helping to keep temperates down and to get maximum overclocks. This will be cooled by a 240mm and a 120mm radiator.

Now, as the 9800GX2 has just been launched, I can’t find any waterblocks for it (well not in this country anyway). So i’ll have to wait for a waterblock. As for radiators, reviews have said that it produces a fair bit of heat, so just as a precaution and as I want to overclock it, I will use 2 240mm radiators for a greater cooling ability.

Now as I have so many fans on the radiators and in the case (12 to be precise) , I plan to have them hooked up to fan controllers to enable me to have a effective cooling without my ears bleeding.

So, once i have designed the layout for the case (and scraped my pennies together) the project will begin!!
