Was asked how I mounted the DVD drive, so here is a photo of the DVD drive and HHD mount.
I used a thin bit of rubber when I mounted the HDD and DVD drive to help stop vibrations, there is also a bit under the DVD drive and the whole mount is bolted the the case. I mounted the HHD so the wires are a bit more hidden. All I need now is a SATA DVD drive to get rid of that massive IDE cable…
Its Finished at last !!! All the paint and metel work is done, the fans and cathode tubes are in and wired up. All the fans (2 x 120mm and 2 x 92mm) are controlled by a fan controller just above the DVD drive, and the cathodes are conected to a switch next to the power button. The two side fans have there own power switches as I dont want them on all the time. All thats left to do is install the hardwear from my current PC. Its not a power house but plays COD4, Grid, Trackmania and CCS(including every readers nite) at max settings with no problems.
Its got a E6420 (2.13 4mb @1066) 2GB of Crucial RAM a HD3870, 320GB samsung T166 spinpoint, Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro and a cooler master eXtreme Power Plus 460W PSU.
The case started life as a cooler master RC-330 and I gave it a good going over. And you never know it might make it into the mag somewere.
Thx to all who have read and followed this build. Here are all the photos I took.. (I will post one more photo when its all installed and lit up)
Strip
Mock up
Cut out
Custom bracket to mount Audio/USB and Fan controller + front grill
Finish project
All of the metal work has now been done, so all that is left to do is use body filler to smooth all the edges. All of the vent work was bonded rather then poprivets, so it will leave a smoother finish. After that it’s paint time.
Most of the time was spent making custom brackets to fit the audio/usb and the fan controler, as the cage that they would have fit into, I ripped out..:)
The fans and metel front panel are bolted from behind, so from the front there are no bolts, screws or poprivets visible….
I cut the slot for the DVD drive and made the mounting brackets with out ever fitting a real DVD drive. When I did get round to taking the DVD drive out of my current PC, it fitted first time.. Shows the use of taking good measurements…Twice..
This is going to be the last full post untill the project is finished, make it a bit of a suprise when I post the pics of the finished case..I will update it a bit when it comes to the hiding of all the wires, Im trying to go for a clean look, so will be cutting or extending to fit around the case..
Thx for the comments and will be back soon..:)
The front was harder than it looks, first I wanted the front to come off and there was no where to attach the metal panel to the front panel. So I had to pop rivet the metal panel to the case 30mm behind of the front panel, so a lot of bending and bending and more bending, I got the front panel to fit flush with the metal panel, and still be able to remove it. I also drilled the hole for a switch to control the neon’s.
I spent a while making a bracket that fits behind the power button that both adds strength and will mount the fan controler (below power button) and audio/USB bits (ubove power button) …
Next was the side panel, I spent a lot of time marking it out before cutting using the cardboard mock up as a template.
Its now all cut and just need to find some more time to finish it off (between work ,wife and two kidds)
thx for reading ,BBS with next post
First up is the strip down, I got the drill out and removed the drive and HHD rack, as Im mounting the DVD drive and the HHD at the bottom of the case Ive no need of the rack.
Next up was to mock up the side vent and window so I could position the fans and see where the cuts needed to be.
Now I had the basic shape I wanted I set about on the front panel, I needed to remove all of the unwanted plastic, again the mighty dremel was king and cut nice and clean. I took my time asto get the best finish I could ( took about 2 and a half hours just on the front panel)
The PC will be in a unit so dust is not a major problem, there will be a 120mm fan at the bottom to cool the DVD drive and the HHD but the top will be open mesh. Got some nice perferated steel with 5mm holes from B&Q
Next will be cutting the front for the DVD drive and ubove the power switch to open it up a bit more. Then the side panel. So its back down the shed with the jigsaw and dremel.

Welcome to my first mod. This is going to be a mod on the cheap as it’s my first project, I did not want to buy the best case and then muller it right up.. Better to do it on a cheaper case first then try it on a better case. This is also my first go at blogging so please be kind.
Im starting with a coolerMaster Elite RC-330 from Ebuyer as it came with a CoolerMaster eXtreme Power Plus 460W psu for £49.97 add to that £15 paint and £20 for filler and metal, it’s not going to cost me silly money.
This is what it should end up looking like
Im going for Razer colours, satin black for the outside and dayglow green for the inside, with two ducts with 92mm fans in the side.
So im now off down the shed with my dremel. BBS
