MMOs aren’t in a vacuum

I once heard someone say that the reason why games companies are going into MMO; the companies see how much money WoW is making. However, they also said that MMOs aren’t in a vacuum: a player in WoW is a player who won’t buy your game - many companies don’t realise this and think that they too can get 9.3 million subscribers.

This is easy to see with TR - here is a list of the servers that you can log onto between WoW and TR:

TR servers

WoW realms

You can see the problem. There are so many people playing WoW (there are LOADS of servers), that there aren’t as many people availiable to play TR. This means that Lord British and his team get less money, create a worse game and thus get less subscribers. It’s an endless circle.

Tabula Rasa: the beginning

Posted in Uncategorized on at 4:04 pm

Well, I have been enlisted to write a review of the new game by Lord British: Tabula Rasa, using the CustomPC blogs. When thinking about what I was going to write, I thought of doing a normal, 800 word review. Then I thought “well, why use a blog to do it?”. So now I have decided to blog about my experiences in game, and give a review that way. Having played about 30 minutes so far, I have seen the problem which most MMORPG face: World of Warcraft. So, I have decided to compare parts of Tabula Rasa (TR) to World of Warcraft (WoW). Since WoW is the best MMO (by the number of subscribers, that is), I hope to help people decided whther to get WoW, TR or just not bother at all.

So, I will play through the game and post back here.
