3 pin or 4 pin, can PWM use Cool ‘n Quiet?

I’ve got myself an old Asus A8N SLI motherboard (the days of 939) and the old CPU cooler needs replacing.

Now my old motherboard has a three pin connector for the CPU cooler’s power, and the Cool ‘N Quiet setup keeps the cooler’s fan running slow when the CPU is cool, and speed’s it up when it raises temperature.

I see that modern coolers have the 4 pin PWM connector and so do the modern motherboards. Now I’ve read you can connect the PWM to the old 3 pin connector on the old motherboard but the PWM cooler control doesn’t work and the fan runs at full whack.

Right, getting to the point, although you lose the PWM heat monitor on an old 3 pin CPU cooler connection doesn’t the old Cool ‘N Quiet simply control it like it was an old school cooler?

I’m all a fuzzle, and I need to sort this out before I buy the replacement cooler.

Any help would me much appreciated.
