Neighbours - do you even know Five?

Channel 4’s Cutting Edge documentary My Street tonight was highly engaging - and can be viewed again at 4oD.com if not Youtube. Since some of the CPC team made reference to buying houses within the last three issues, they will soon have the fun and games of the tenant lottery. If they’re “lucky” enough to live next to buy to let properties, that is.

It’s literally a laugh a minute. In six years I’ve found that screaming babies made an excellent alarm clock, getting me out of bed, and keeping fairly random hours, parties until 3am didn’t really bother me that much, since my own music can get quite loud and there are at least two guitarists who also own flats in my terrace. Being a music lover, Sunday afternoon with live renditions of Led Zepplin, Prince and other guitar-led music parts can be appreciated rather than being a pain.

The filmmaker used the simple device of a bunch of talking heads but in a non-fictional setting. It was as powerful as anything Alan Bennett could compose to see mental and terminal illness, immigration, old age, Aussies abroad and criminal rehabilitation, talked about eloquently and without condescension.

It is sad that we don’t really know our neighbours anymore, but if they’re only renting the property at least you’ll eventually see the back of them if they choose to not get on with you.
