NO! To Christmas in September

At my local Co-op they have mince pies, brandy butter and several other assorted foods that you associate with Christmas - as of the start of this month!! Apart from that certifiable bloke from that documentary on Five who really does live the lyrics of the Wizzard song and celebrates Christmas every day, I don’t know anyone who’d want to eat Christmas food almost four months before the actual two days of the season. With boxes of Christmas cards falling to as little as £1 each, only surface mailers to certain countries need them now - the rest of us probably have at least half a box to get us started, meaning that buying before November would be, in my view, equally strange.

It’s not even in the same league as Easter eggs in February because chocolate’s chocolate - under the guise of Cadbury’s Creme Eggs you could argue that they are already on sale all year round. It’s just the insanity of the supermarkets after all, Xmas grub is seasonal, but still domestically made, it’s not like they are taking them from a different country when they are in their best condition. Or is there nothing better than a hot mince pie whatever time of year it is, when summer’s drawn to a close?

I agree that September is two months too early to be selling Christmas stuff. Some shops start as soon as the “back to school” rush is over, others wait until they’ve cleared their shelves of Halloween merchandise. By the time it gets to Christmas these days I’m almost fed up of the whole thing which, needless to say, ruins the entire experience.

This year, i’ve become tired of special events. On halloween I did nothing, and indeed found myself loathing the cash in, the pumpkins at ASDA (which were ALL bruised and sqaushed). Christmas is just another day when we get together as a family and eat loads of food. I doubt anyone actually cares what it means, because very few people actually live as Christians anymore (myself included).

Oh yeah, I’m loving the AWFUL “back to school PCs” which all seem to have Celeron processors and Intel GMA graphics. What bright spark decided that children need a crap PC everytime they start their education again? Is it so that they have more time to do homework when they wont play any games and break all the time? Perhaps I should take a tube of liquid nitrogen to one and… well, the rest is (or soon will be) history.
