So i’ve had a teensy bit more thought put into this project. The space i’ve got for the case measures 18×17.2×10″. Which is the size of a small case on it’s side. Which is a good thing.
I’ve decided to base the design on my old case - it fits nearly perfectly into the enclosure. I think it’d be much safer to rip it apart and slap some wood onto it rather than risk frying all my components by building a completely wooden case from scratch. Obviously as a poor student I have a lack of power tools so destroying a thick steel case won’t be easy. There will also be the problem of cutting holes for air intake. The case only has the one 80mm intake at the front and if I want the PC to be quiet and cool in a wooden enclosure i’ll probably want a pair of 120mm fans.
On another note i’ve got my hands on a Coolermaster Aquagate Viva Duo. It was a gift for christmas, but i’ve not gotten round to installing it. Can anyone attest to the reliability of this water cooling kit? I’d probably use it on the graphics card and northbridge as grafting a graphics card cooler onto my processor is a little beyond me.
Well inspiration is a funny thing. Some get it from nature, some from great achievements and some from dreams. My inspiration to make a PC case actually came from a dream.
There I was minding my own business in my dream world playing Bomberman Live and I reached forward for a beer. And lo and behold there was a beer fridge as PART OF MY TV STAND!
That did it. I knew I couldn’t build a beer fridge into it, but at the moment there are a good few games/dvds taking up all that useful space so I decided to build a media PC. The fact is that I don’t actively NEED a media PC. I’ve got a nice enough setup in my bedroom, not too expensive that I feel guilty about playing xbox, but not too slow that it won’t play the latest games (Q6600, 4GB RAM, 8600GT).
My old pc is still quite a performer, however it’s just gathering dust at the moment due to the fact that it has no HDD. It’s an AMD Athlon X2 4400+, 2 GB RAM with some sort of 7 series card in it. I feel that, as a student, it is my DUTY to save money. Hence i’m going to be using all these parts. It’s got everything it needs to work except for a HDD.
I plan to make a case out of wood. Not only will this satisfy my cravings to be Jesus, but it will be extraordinarily cheap. There is also the fact that I want to make it match the TV stand, which is one of those massive Ikea jobbies. A new Graphics card may be in order eventually, and that’s assuming that I decide I want to play games the on machine (it’s attached to a 37″ HDTV so the prospects are certainly tempting) but for the moment the DVI connector on the TV will be enough to watch (legally) downloaded movies and play my massive music collection without having to change CD every 5 seconds.
I already anticipate air flow being a problem, with my plans involving a closing door on the front and the fact that the thing will be made of WOOD. Pictures will follow as soon as I can persuade the other half to lend me her camera. Which I bought her. Hm.
