Sulla becomes dictator of Rome

There was a period in the history of Rome when the situation called for one man, Sulla to be in complete personal control. But he has now re-appointed magistrates and passed laws restoring to each their traditional tasks and powers. And if the men appointed want to keep these powers, they can, for ever but not if they indulge or acquiesce in acts of robbery and murder, or in such lavish expenditure.
In effect, any hopes could only be fulfilled by the enlarged senate. From the outset, however, there must have been grave doubt whether its members were capable of maintaining sufficient unity and sense of responsibility to provide the self-denying collegial leadership that Sulla somehow expected of them.
